Ulverston’s St Mary’s Roman Catholic School celebrate a special 25th birthday

SILVER jubilee celebrations, which included a special 25th birthday party for more than 100 pupils, took place at the St Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Ulverston in October 1995.

The celebrations, which were held to mark the 25th anniversary of moving to the school site in Springfield Road, began with the holding of a special mass.

Throughout the day an exhibition of photographs showing many old pupils and former staff who featured in the life of the school over the past quarter of a century was staged.

Among 70 special guests attending the celebrations were former teachers who had taught at the school along with three RC priests who had served in the Ulverston parish over the previous 25 years.

One of the main highlights for boys and girls from the school was a special birthday party held during the afternoon to mark the silver anniversary.

Excited youngsters aged from four to 11 laughed and shrieked with enjoyment at the entertainment provided by Jem the Juggler, one of the Ulverston-based Fairly Famous Family group.

As well as tucking into two huge birthday cakes baked specially for the occasion children enjoyed lots of other goodies.

Before it moved to its Springfield Road site in September 1970, St Mary’s RC school was based in Victoria Road next to the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary of Furness.

In 1997 an Ulverston schoolboy picked up a top prize in a national competition for his talented letter writing.

Stefan Orlowski, 11, of Springfield Road Ulverston, won the creative prize for the North West entrants in that year’s Royal Mail Young Letter Writers’ competition.

Stefan had to write a letter on the theme of My Dream Job and chose to send Christopher Wren a letter to become an architect.

It included a cut-out model of some buildings.

The St Mary’s RC Primary School pupil won £50 and a certificate.

The competition attracted more than half a million entries.
