Bun throwing has been taking place in Abingdon for centuries and is often staged to celebrate major Royal occasions.
It could return in 2022 to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
Here we remember previous celebrations when buns were thrown from the roof of the county hall museum into the market place below.
Although the town council has not made any announcement yet, it’s possible that bun throwing could take place to mark the jubilee.

The last session took place in 2018 to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War, while in 2016 the tradition was held to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday.
The Royal Family website said: “In 2022, Her Majesty The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, 70 years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6th February 1952 when Her Majesty was 25 years old.
“Throughout the year, Her Majesty and members of the Royal Family will travel around the country to undertake a variety of engagements to mark this historic occasion culminating with the focal point of the Platinum Jubilee Weekend in June.
An extended bank holiday, from Thursday, June 2 to Sunday, June 5, will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone. The four days of celebrations will include public events and community activities, as well as national moments of reflection on The Queen’s 70 years of service.”
The town council website said: “Bun Throwing is one of several ancient traditions of Abingdon-on-Thames.

“The town council is the organiser of Bun-Throwings which are held, usually as a gesture of loyalty and goodwill to the monarch, and mainly associated with royal events.”
