Royal Mail has ‘thousands’ of Christmas temporary jobs and some pay £15-an-hour

The Royal Mail has released its Christmas temporary job roles and encouraged people to apply.

The postal service needs ‘thousands more hands’ during the Christmas period and has roles available in Greenford and Hounslow in West London.

They are offering Londoners £13.45-an-hour for seasonal mail sorter roles during the day, increasing to £15.75-an-hour if you are willing to work nights.

Seasonal mail sorters responsibilities include unloading mail and parcels from vans, moving them through warehouses and ensuring that they arrive at their destination safely.

The mail sorter jobs are available to everyone and in the Royal Mail’s advertisement they said: “Unsurprisingly, Christmas is the busiest time of year at Royal Mail.

“And with so many parcels and letters flowing through our warehouse, we always need a few thousand extra hands!

“Every year over the holiday season, temporary flexible workers from all walks of life help us to get everything where it needs to go.”

The seasonal jobs are usually contracted at 12 weeks with an opportunity to extend if the demand remains or you impress the company.

There are no formal qualifications needed but you’ve got to be able to ‘stand on your feet’ for long periods and help ‘sort over a million items with your team during a single shift’.

So far only two mail sorting hubs are offering seasonal jobs in London and they are both in the West.

Greenford and Hounslow sites are looking for extra help and those interested have been advised to apply quickly.

Royal Mail encourage people to apply if:

  • You enjoy working in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
  • You’re proactive and detail-focused
  • You’re flexible and happy to switch between various tasks during a shift
  • You’re able to push trolleys (up to 250kgs) and lift and move mail bags (up to 11kg)
  • You can comfortably stand for long periods.

Typical shift patterns for the seasonal jobs are:

Lates: Monday to Friday, hours from 2.15pm and 12am.

Nights: Either Monday to Friday, or Monday to Saturday, hours from 10.15pm to 6.30am.
