Hartlepool’s Giving Tree is back – spreading festive joy to those most in need

Hartlepool’s annual Christmas giving tree, found at Middleton Grange, is returning this year to spread more festive joy.

Generosity within the Hartlepool community and across the UK skyrocketed in supporting the Giving Tree campaign in 2020, with over 170,000 gifts collected.

Due to the pandemic, the campaign to support local charities had to move online, which meant presents were being sent from all over the country and even from around the world.

This year, the donators will be able to choose a tag and purchase a gift via the Giving Tree Website, or through the traditional tree route.

Either way the gifts are delivered to children or the elderly in need for Christmas Day.

Mark Rycraft, centre manager at Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, said: “Due to the overwhelming generosity and level of success last year with the online Giving Tree, this Christmas we have decided to combine it with Middleton Grange’s traditional tree which is based physically in the centre

“The two trees will allow us to continue to work together with the Giving Tree campaign to provide for those less fortunate than us.

“The idea is that those wanting to donate can select a tag from the tree located on the first floor opposite Iceland, which includes the gender and age of individuals needing a gift this Christmas.

“The presents can then be taken wrapped or unwrapped to the drop off point near the tree and Iceland in Middleton Grange, where those who wouldn’t ordinarily receive a gift at Christmas will now do so thanks to the generosity of our community.”

Joanne Horner from Domestic Abuse Charity, Harbour said; “We are so grateful for the support we received last year which enabled us to make Christmas special for many children and families.

“Many of those we are supporting will struggle to have a happy and peaceful Christmas this year, but the Giving Tree campaign will hopefully mean we can ensure that no children is without a gift on Christmas Day.”
