Yorkshire’s weirdest postcode stretches from city centre to Peak District

Follow our photo journey through improbable postcode from urban noise to big sky countryside

Usually, your postcode will give some clues as to the type of place you live in.

If there’s a ‘1’ after the first letters (or letter) it’s pretty likely it’ll be in the centre of a big city or town. For example, DN1, HX1, LS1, S1, and WF1 are in the centre of Yorkshire’s largest cities and towns.

Generally the greater the number, the further from the town or city centre they are. For example, YO62 is in the middle of rural North Yorkshire and LS29 (Ilkley) isn’t particularly near Leeds. In fact, it isn’t even under the purview of Leeds City Council.

However, there are a few wild card postcodes that give no indication of the area they cover.

Maybe you want to buy a home in S11? Search Rightmove and you could be offered a flat in Sheffield city centre or a detached house deep inside the Peak District.

Yes, S11 is one of Yorkshire’s strangest postcodes stretching from just within the inner ring road opposite Waitrose to the edge of the village of Grindleford, in the Peak District, and Derbyshire.

The ‘postcode district’ (i.e. the first digits of a postcode, e.g. S1, LS8, YO22) were determined by the volume of mail each district received when they were created in the late 1960s.

Why S11 is such a long, narrow and varied postcode we’re not sure. Perhaps it was one of the last Sheffield districts to be allocated a postcode when the Post Office was devising today’s system back then?

Anyway, to illustrate how ludicrously varied it is, take our photo journey through S11 below.
