Royal Mail capacity issues leading to home COVID test limits

Thanks to capacity issues with Royal Mail, the UK government is to deliver home COVID-19 tests through private operators such as Amazon as well as the main UK postal operator.

Issues with delivery led some to believe that there was a shortage of the tests. In response to those fears, Health Secretary Sajid Javid said in the House of Commons, “I can reassure this House that the UK has sufficient lateral flow tests to see us through the coming weeks.

“If anyone finds they are unable to get a kit online, they should check the website the following day or pop down to their local pharmacy and pick up a kit.”

Ordering limits had been placed on the kits only because of the inability of Royal Mail to get them to end users.

He added: “There are new arrangements that I’ve reached with Amazon and other delivery methods.”

More access points for collection of the home testing kits will be arranged that will include pharmacies. The Health Secretary reassured the public that ‘record numbers’ of such tests will be delivered under the new arrangements.

Labour deputy leader, Angela Rayner, accused the Government of being “reckless” over its “inability to procure properly and plan for civil contingencies”.

She tweeted: “Boris Johnson has his priorities in the wrong place.”
