Silver Swans ballet in Colchester set to expand

A BALLET programme is set to expand allowing more people to participate.

The Royal Academy of Dance’s Silver Swans ballet programme in Colchester provides the opportunity to learn and experience some of the most famous ballets from the inside.

And the project is also looking to break down misconceptions over stereotypes. Silver Swans tutor Fanny Harniess wants to have a more diverse student base and is encouraging more men to join the Swans.

She said: “They don’t really have to wear tights and it’s a brilliant way to get fit.

“The swans who have been dancing with me for some time definitely can’t be called beginners anymore.

“I want to give others the chance to do the same and start at the beginning.

“Anyone can do it, it’s all about adapting and making it possible.”

Silver Swans is aimed at the over-55 demographic but is not exclusive to one age group.

Classes include an improvers level, which requires some knowledge of ballet technique and terminology, but a high level of experience is not required.

An expertise class is available for those with a good understanding of technique.

All classes are on Thursday mornings at the Headgate studio in Colchester from January 6.
