Amazon orders Stellantis EV vans

Amazon has announced a deal with Stellantis to buy a large number of its Ram ProMaster electric vans when the vehicles start rolling out of the factory in 2023.

Amazon and Stellantis said that the online giant would be Stellantis’ first EV customer. The Ram ProMaster is the automotive manufacturer’s first step into EVs, and its launch was announced back in August 2021.

Though the two firms announced the deal they did not elaborate much more other than the Amazon vehicles would have ‘unique last mile delivery features’, thanks to input from the logistics and retail giant.

Stellantis currently provides Amazon with a large proportion of its internal combustion engine van fleet in the US, which currently amounts to 70,000 vehicles across all makes. Rivian however, in which Amazon has a 20% stake, has an order for 100,000 EV delivery vehicles, the first of which are on US roads now.

“We always knew that our ambitious sustainability goals in our last mile operations would require multiple electric delivery van providers,” Amazon said in an emailed statement. “We continue to be excited about our relationship with Rivian, and this doesn’t change anything about our investment, collaboration, or order size and timing.”
