Scots postie delivered £5 own money to boy after spotting birthday balloons

A Scots postie delivered £5 of his own money to a young boy after spotting birthday balloons at the youngster’s home.

Harry Newman was delighted when he found the £5 note on his doorstep on Friday morning alongside a birthday message from his postman.

The five-year-old, from Linlithgow, West Lothian, had celebrated his birthday the previous day and was blown away by the thoughtful gesture.

An image shows one of Royal Mail’s famous ‘something for you’ red cards with the message: “For Harry, Happy Birthday” alongside a doodle of a smiley face.

The postman, known as Raymond, had noticed Harry’s birthday balloons at the window so delivered the card along with cash while doing his rounds.

Harry’s mum Laura, 31, was taken aback by the gesture and branded Raymond the “best in Linlithgow”.

Laura took to Twitter on Friday (December 31) to highlight the gesture of kindness, writing: “@RoyalMail we have the best postie in Linlithgow.

“Saw my son’s birthday balloons and posted this through the door.

“What a kind gesture royalmail bestpostie.”

Laura’s tweet is yet to be acknowledged by Royal Mail, but she hopes the company will take notice of their employee’s kind gift.

Speaking today, Laura said: “I had some police helium balloons visible from our front window which said ‘Happy 5th Birthday Harry’ on them.

“Our postman Raymond saw them and put the Royal Mail card with the birthday message and the £5 note through our letterbox.

“Raymond is a genuinely lovely guy. He’s been our postie for at least three years and is always so nice.

“He will do anything for you and will always go out of his way to help but giving £5 of his own money is heartwarming.

“Harry was so excited that he went to the trouble of recognising his birthday.

“I hoped Royal Mail would see it as it’s such a wonderful gesture.”
