It’s a big year ahead for local politics, with the start of all out elections that will be held every four years.
The system – which sees every seat on the council contested – gives the electorate greater power to shape who they want in the Town Hall.
The situation should make it the most intriguing election locally for more than a decade.
It’s going to be important we see healthy debate from across the political spectrum, with the various parties setting out their plans for the future of St Helens and how to address the challenges it faces.

In the end, he came up just short but his hometown is rightly proud of his outstanding performance.
Michael is another outstanding St Helens sportsman who has hit the heights on the national stage.
He is a great example to the town’s youngsters of how talent and dedication can take you to the top.
