The Rolling Stones, who celebrate their 60th anniversary later this year, will be honoured by Royal Mail with twelve unique stamps that commemorate the band’s genesis.
The band are the fourth to receive this honour, following in the footsteps of The Beatles in 2007, Pink Floyd in 2016 and Queen’s commemorative set in 2020. In a statement, David Gold – Royal Mail’s Director of Public Affairs & Policy – said: ‘Few bands in the history of rock have managed to carve out a career as rich and expansive as that of The Rolling Stones.’
Gold continued, ‘they have created some of modern music’s most iconic and inspirational albums, with ground-breaking live performances to match.’ The stamps are now available to pre-order and will go on general sale on 20th January via the Royal Mail website.
Among the images featured on the various sets of stamps is the band performing across the decades, from their free 1969 show in London’s Hyde Park, to a concert in Oslo, Norway, in May 2014 – a testament to the band’s endurance. Also included as a solo photograph taken in Düsseldorf of Charlie Watts, who sadly passed away last year.
The Oslo show is one of many featured in The Rolling Stones Set Lists by Ronnie Wood. Published in 2018, this large-format book sees Ronnie Wood’s fascinating set lists published for the first time. Presented in chronological order, each year of set lists is introduced with a selection of photographs and Stones memorabilia, from A Bigger Bang in 2005 to the 2018 No Filter tour.
A talented artist in his own right, Wood’s colourful hand-lettering recalls his early art school days when he worked as a sign writer. His calligraphy is interspersed with illustrations, doodles by fellow band members, and jotted notes that all add up to paint a picture of life on the road with the Rolling Stones.
Ronnie Wood’s personal reflections bring the story of the set lists to life as he discusses the band’s creative process, learning up to 80 songs per tour and personal highlights from the Stones’ tours.
