When will first and second class stamps become unusable?

Yep, it’s happening. First and second class stamps as we know them are officially changing.

In an effort to go digital, in the not-so-distant future, Christmas and Definitive (the regular ones we use with The Queen on) stamps will come with a unique barcode.

They’ll connect the stamp to the Royal Mail app, and the unique feature may make it easier to track everyday post.

For stamps to be valid, they’ll need to appear on the envelope with the barcode still attached. This means any existing stamps you have will need to be used up before the switch occurs.

So, when will that be, exactly?

When do I have to use my old stamps by?

Don’t fret. You’ve got until January 31, 2023 to use up any old stamps.

Even better, you’ll have the chance to trade your old ones way before then.

From March 31, Royal Mail will launch a ‘Swap Out’ scheme, which will be accessible on their website nearer the time.

There’ll also be an option to send them off in post offices with customer service points, or even by Freepost.

And if all this has reminded you that you’re out of stamps and need to buy some now, they’re already available to buy.

Announcing the changes, Royal Mail said on its website: ‘Following a successful national trial we will now be adding unique barcodes to all our regular ‘everyday’ Definitive and Christmas stamps.

‘Each barcoded stamp will have a digital twin and the two will be connected by the Royal Mail App. The unique barcodes will facilitate operational efficiencies, enable the introduction of added security features and pave the way for innovative services for our customers.’
