Mystery of vanishing post boxes in town

Three Norton post boxes – a valued link to the world – have gone ‘missing’.

As a result of the disappearances, Councillor Di Keal is asking for them to be brought back to restore a vital service to the community.

“Residents have contacted me to ask what is happening and why post boxes have been removed, meaning people have to walk much further to post their letters.

“Not everyone relies on email – letter boxes are still needed and important to local communities,” said Di.

“The downturn started when Beverley Road post office closed some years ago and the post box went too, but this has now been followed by boxes on Langton Road, near Bazeleys Lane, and a further one has ‘disappeared’ on Beverley Road near Wood Street.”

The box near Wood Street was lost when former factory buildings were demolished recently.

Councillor Keal has written to the Post Office asking them to review the situation.

“Older residents are saying that they find it hard to walk the distances to the remaining letter boxes in Norton, so I am calling on the post office to revisit decisions to remove them and ensure that our town is well served by Royal Mail.

“Providing enough post boxes should be part of their service and sadly this is being completely undermined in Norton by stealth, as the letterboxes have gone with no consultation or consideration for local need.

“A lot of correspondence these days is conducted by email and some people may feel that letter boxes are now redundant, but the reality is that many people rely on Royal Mail for everything from sending birthday cards to important business letters and we need to retain theses boxes.”
