Mystery as Huddersfield village postboxes sprayed green and locals demand police manhunt

The mystery of who is painting Huddersfield’s Royal Mail post boxes green deepened last night (Sun) after another one was spotted on the Marsh/Edgerton border.

On Saturday YorkshireLive reported West Yorkshire Police were looking into how several post boxes had been painted apple-green in the Fenay Bridge/Lepton area. At first, it was thought the idea of painting the boxes might have been to do with a Green party supporter making an all-too-obvious point ahead of the Kirklees elections on polling day (Thurs).

Kirklees councillor Bernard McGuin, (Con, Almondbury), who has an Irish background and who drew attention to what was happening, said it might even be a Sinn Fein propaganda stunt after the party’s success in the May elections. He said: “I am astonished by what has happened but it seems that someone involved in Sinn Fein could be involved here.”

Green party leader Andrew Cooper said: “Nothing to do with us and not the sort of thing the Green Party would do.” Margaret Hardy, 79, who has lived in Edgerton for more than 40 years joked: “Edgerton is a conservation area so we take any kind of ‘tradition-baiting’ extremely seriously here! I just hope the police are doing their best to find the culprit.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We do not know who repainted these postboxes, and are reporting this matter to the police. We will be repainting the boxes in the iconic red as soon as possible.”
