Yorkshire’s ‘fit felon’ Jonathan Cahill is back behind bars

A prolific criminal, who hit the headlines across the country earlier this year because of his looks, is now back behind bars.

Jonathan Cahill, 37, has been jailed for 21 months after pleading guilty to a number of crimes, Yorkshire Live reports. Cahill, of Fairfield Drive, Ossett, Wakefield, appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. He also two summary offences of failing to provide a specimen for analysis and using a vehicle without insurance.

He was jailed for 21 months by His Honour Judge Mushtaq Khokhar. Cahill hit the headlines this year when West Yorkshire Police launched an appeal to find him.

Cahill was wanted on prison recall for breaching his bail conditions after being released from a sentence for burglary last September. Cahill was jailed in 2015 and sentenced alongside co-accused Daniel Kaye. Both received sentenced of eight years after they stole thousands of pounds worth of readily-saleable items such as laptops and phones. They also took keys and drove away expensive cars.

Leeds Crown Court heard at the time the pair accessed targeted properties by forcing locks. Cahill was arrested at a petrol station after he had just driven there in a Vauxhall Insignia car which was bearing a false registration number and had been stolen on an earlier occasion during a burglary in Manchester.

In West Yorkshire Police’s appeal in January this year, he was described as being of medium build and approximately six feet tall. The force posted their appeal, but rather than helpful responses, received comments from women praising his good looks.

June Brown commented: “What’s his crime breaking hearts or houses?” Other social media users said they’d happily volunteer to find Cahill and one added: “If I find him, can I keep him?”

Another said: “Should be easy to find, half the women in West Yorkshire will be chasing him after reading these comments.” One person wrote: “Bet his ego is massive after reading lots of these comments.”

Others were not impressed with the response and one person said: “Seriously. A guy keeps his hair past 30 and becomes some kind of god.” Another said: “I must need to go to Specsavers because I can’t see what everyone else seems to be seeing.”

After Cahill was found and news of his arrest was shared, many across the county spoke of their disappointment, and made joke of his earlier popularity. A woman named Sarah said: “Probably for his own safety. I can see him sprinting into the station with a mob of women behind him offering him ‘amnesty’ and him begging to be locked up to save his last pair of prison-issue grey sweatpants from being torn off. Poor guy!”

Caroline joked: “Bet he handed himself in for safety reasons!” and Angela wrote: “Will need his own Royal Mail truck for the letters!”
