Greenslade Taylor Hunt Collectors’ Sale

THOSE who like their model locomotives on a larger scale are in for a treat at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s next specialist Collectors’ Sale.

The varied lots on offer at the sale on Friday, June 10, include a 3½ inch gauge live steam tank engine.

This impressive, well-engineered piece measures a mighty 70cm in length and carries an estimate of £600 to £700.

In the ready-to-run line there are numerous ‘O’ and ‘OO’ gauge entries, including those of S.R., L.S.W.R., and S.E. & C.R. interest.

Continuing the theme is a historically important photograph album chronicling the building of the Lower Shire & Shire Highland Railways in Nyasaland (modern day Malawi), between 1902 and 1909 with a pre-sale guide of £400-£500).

Dating to the same period but from closer to home is a locally published postcard of a train crash at Highbridge in 1909 – from one of 18 group lots of postcards in the sale.

Had you been planning a long distance journey back then you would have been glad of the Louis Vuitton brown leather case that features in the same Taunton auction. Guided at £150 to £200 this combines quality and style with practicality.

Fans of time travel, however, will be drawn to a collection of autographs in which William Hartnell, television’s original Dr Who, makes an appearance.

He is joined by a number of the Doctor’s early assistants; and a host of others – from Dudley Moore and Sid James to the Somerset, Surrey and Yorkshire cricket teams of the early 1970s.

Among a fine selection of coins there are numerous gold sovereigns and guineas, as well as a Scottish Mary I ryal (1565), William III silver farthing (1698), George I crown (1720), and a Victoria Maundy money set (1895).

As usual the full catalogue is available online and in printed form, and there will be opportunities to bid in the room, on the telephone or via the live internet link.
