Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: Residents dance to Sweet Caroline

SINGING, dancing and a shed load of bubbly.

That’s how residents and staff at Shinfield View care home have been celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Celebrations at the home on School Green, Shinfield began on Thursday, June 2, with a garden party and BBQ laid on for residents, complete with a variety of traditional English puddings.

Residents and staff rounded off the afternoon with a rendition of Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline, joining tens of thousands of others up and down the country to sing the song, which was chosen by listeners of Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 Breakfast Show to mark the Jubilee celebrations.

On Friday, June 3, Shinfield View hosted a royal high tea, where residents were able to raise their glasses of Champagne to Her Majesty and enjoy an equally regal choice of sandwiches and cakes.

Resident John Homan, said: The celebrations we’ve had to mark the Platinum Jubilee have been magnificent.

“I can remember the 1953 coronation vividly. I was about 16 years old, and my mum and dad had been out to buy a black and white TV especially to watch it. But my father and I walked into the living room to watch the service only to find out my mother had invited about 30 of her friends and neighbours around to watch it too.

“The house was so jam-packed with people that dad and I had to go outside. We ended up missing the live coronation! However, we were able to enjoy the street party that followed. It was a wonderful time.”

General Manager of Shinfield View Jodie Whatmore said: “It’s been fantastic for our residents to be able to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in such style. Many of our residents can remember back to when Her Majesty ascended the throne, and it was important that they were able to celebrate such a momentous occasion.

“Our staff have worked extremely hard to bring these events together, and it typifies their hard work and dedication to residents’ happiness and wellbeing that makes Shinfield View such a great place to live.”

Chief Executive of Berkley Care Group Andrew Winstanley added: “It’s fantastic that at Shinfield View, as in all of our homes, residents have been able to celebrate this historic moment in our nation’s history. Jodie at the team at Shinfield have done a tremendous job in putting on the garden party, BBQ and high tea, and they exemplify the high standards we strive for in all of our homes.”
