Martin Lewis issues urgent warning about ‘clever scam’ that could cost you thousands

Martin Lewis has issued an urgent warning ahead of a widespread scam. The Money Saving Expert is more popular than ever amid rocketing inflation and a cost of living crisis.

People are turning to experts like Martin Lewis more and more to help save a few quid with his handy tips. His most recent tip can save you literally thousands as he has warned his legions of fans to look out for a scam that crooks are using to clean people out of their savings.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Beware. Just had a clever version of the ‘pay £1.99 for Post Office Parcel delivery’ scam text, aiming to steal bank info.

“The ‘fee’ isn’t mentioned in the text, it talks about ‘delays in transit’ and offers ‘a date to reschedule’. It’s only when you click thru it mentions a fee.”

The Money Saving Expert also said the text is clever because the scam, which is a fairly common one in the UK, has “morphed and is now less obvious”.

The tweet has received dozens of responses with other social media users saying they’ve also received the scam text. One said: “I had one of those the other day, I asked for photographic proof of a parcel with my name and address or I would forward their number to the police.. funny still haven’t had a reply.”

Another added: “Not just the Post office – it’s also Evri and DPD – had the identical text from both of them.”

A third person replied: “Post Office will never send a text. Also, Post Office do not deliver mail, that is Royal Mail. It’s always a scam.”

Another commented: “Had one of those before (and I was waiting on a parcel). The minute I saw they wanted my payment detail I deleted it.”

Which? said they work together to deploy a tool which collates all the information from the 7726 shortcode in real-time. This means they can take early action to block numbers that are generating spam on their networks.

They can also use this information to inform the regulators. When you report a spam text you may get an automated response thanking you for the report giving you further instructions if needed.
