Royal Mail adds 3,000th EV van to fleet

Royal Mail has put its 3,000th electric delivery van into operation. The roll out of electric vans has been at over 70 delivery offices across many cities with low emissions zones including London, Bristol, Glasgow, Cambridge, and Oxford.

According to the postal operator, its 3,000th electric vehicle was deployed at its Peterborough delivery office that currently uses 106 electric vans in a 100% electric fleet.

Royal Mail CEO Simon Thompson and Paul Bristow, MP for Peterborough, visited the site to celebrate the milestone.

“I loved driving this electric vehicle today at the Royal Mail Delivery Office and Mail Centre in Werrington. It’s important the Royal Mail invest in electric vehicles as they are better for their staff as well as the environment,” said Paul Bristow, MP for Peterborough.

The transition to EV vans began in July 2021 and this month, Letchworth has become the latest delivery office to make the transition.

“The transition to electric vehicles is a key part of our strategy to reduce our emissions whilst delivering a seven-day parcel service to our customers,” Royal Mail CEO Simon Thompson added.

As part of its continued plans to electrify its fleet, Royal Mail has announced a deal to buy 2,000 additional Peugeot delivery vans of which 1,000 will be Peugeot Partner and the other 1,000 will be Peugeot Expert models. This is part of the postal operator’s target to have 5,500 EV delivery vans on the road by spring 2023.

Peugeot UK Managing Director, Julie David, said: “Peugeot began its relationship with Royal Mail in 2009 and I am incredibly pleased that we can continue this support with models from our award-winning electric van range.”
