Residents and local businesses alike are up in arms over a significant reduction in the opening times of Ryde’s Royal Mail sorting office.
As of this week, the sorting office on Nicholson Road will only open for 2 hours on a Monday, between 08:00-10:00, and for 6 hours between 08:00-14:00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. At the weekend, the doors will be open between 08:00-12noon on a Saturday and completely closed on Sunday.
Since COVID, the sorting office has been open less than normal between 08:00-14:00 on a Monday and 08:00-14:00 & 16:00-19:00 on weekdays, as well as 08:00-15:00 on Saturdays. On a Wednesday they have been open for an extra hour in the evening until 20:00.
This new change in opening times means that locals are unable to collect or drop off mail after 14:00 on any day of the week. It represents a cut of some 20 hours from 50 to 30.
The news means that those who work are unable to collect any missed parcels with ease. Furthermore, businesses who send letters and parcels will either have to post earlier in the day or save the mail until the following morning – adding to the expected delivery time for their customers.
Historically, the sorting office was open for 64 hours a week meaning that its opening times have more than halved over the years.
