Royal Mail strike dates and when post will be delivered as customers warned of disruption

Royal Mail workers are holding a number of strikes following a dispute over pay.

Earlier this month Royal Mail The Communication Workers Union (CWU) confirmed that around 115,000 postal workers are set to walk out. This comes after the union rejected a two per cent pay rise offer, demanding a “dignified, proper pay rise”.

With this, customers have been warned to expect disruption over the strike days.

The first wave of industrial action for Royal Mail staff will take place on Friday (August 26) and Wednesday (August 31). After that strikes are planned for September 8 and 9.

The company has apologised to customers, but says it has plans to minimise the disruption. Customers should also note that there will not be any Royal Mail deliveries or collections on Monday (August 29) due to it being the Summer Bank Holiday.

On strike days, Royal Mail said it will:

  • Deliver as many Special Delivery and Tracked24 parcels as possible
  • Prioritise the delivery of COVID test kits and medical prescriptions wherever possible
  • Not be delivering letters (with the exception of Special Delivery)

It is also advising customers to:

  • Post your items as early as possible in advance of the strike dates
  • Continue to post your items at post boxes or Post Offices, however collections will be less frequent on days when strike action is taking place

In a statement it said: “Royal Mail has well-developed contingency plans, but they cannot fully replace the daily efforts of its frontline workforce. We will be doing what we can to keep services running, but customers should expect significant disruption.”

This comes as strike action over pay are causing disruption around Scotland as a number of industries request better wages as the cost of living rises and inflation hits 10.1 per cent.

Waste workers in 14 local authorities are the latest to confirm they are striking, as has staff from schools and nurseries.
