Wilko’s new home in Nuneaton town centre finally confirmed

Wilko’s new home in Nuneaton town centre has finally been confirmed. It has long been rumoured that the company is due to move into the former Woolworths store in Queens Road.

Both the national company and Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, which owns 22 Queens Road, have repeatedly not publicly stated that the move was going ahead. However, the relocation to the former Woolworths building, which has also been a TJ Hughes and Poundland in its past, has been confirmed in a council document seen by CoventryLive.

Wilko has to move from its current store in Church Street to help pave the way for a £27m library, office and business quarter to be created in this part of the town centre. The new library will replace the town’s existing library, which is set to be demolished as well as the former Wilkos store as well as the Post Office sorting office.

In the document, it explains: “The current proposals for this long-standing development opportunity site (including the Post Office and Royal Mail sorting office, the Wilko store and library off Church Street) comprises a mixed use residential and office quarter with a new library.

“As part of this scheme being promoted by WCC (Warwickshire County Council) the post office/sorting office will be relocated while the former Poundland store on Queens Road (recently acquired by NBBC) will be sub-divided to facilitate the relocation of Wilko.”

What is not known is when the move will take place. While Wilko will be remaining in the town centre, it is understood that the sorting office will be moving to a unit in Bermuda park.

This followed a planning application being submitted for Royal Mail livery on one of the buildings.
