Are the Royal Mail workers on strike today, September 9th?

The Royal Mail workers and postmen conducted a strike on Thursday, September 8th, and two more strikes have been planned to take place on September 30th and October 1st. But, is there one today, September 9th?

The Royal Mail workers and postmens’ strike over pay has caused disruption in services across the United Kingdom and the protests are far from over.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) notified that 115,000 of its members would walk out on Thursday, September 8th, following last week’s strike. Customers were warned of the disruption in services and deliveries as a result of the ongoing protest.

Are the Royal Mail on strike today, September 9th?

Although a 48-hour Royal Mail strike from the 8th to the 9th of September was previously announced, the company has now relayed that the industrial action today has been suspended.

Taking to its Twitter account, the CWU wrote: “Following the very sad news of the passing of the Queen and out of respect for her service to the country and her family, the union has decided to call off tomorrow’s planned strike action.”

The CWU members will conduct their strike again on Friday, 30th September, and Saturday, 1st October 2022.

The postal service company notified that although they are doing their best to keep the services running, the strikes will still cause major disruption.

Why are the workers protesting?

The workers are protesting against an “imposed” 2% pay rise.

The CWU has said that its workers experienced a “dramatic” reduction in standards of living due to soaring inflation in the UK.

As ITV reports, the Union’s general secretary, Dave Ward, has noted that the workers are united in their determination to secure a “dignified, proper pay rise they deserve.”

“We can’t keep on living in a country where bosses rake in billions in profit while their employees are forced to use food banks,” he said.

CWU insists that their workers also deserve a pay rise due to their “fantastic achievements” in keeping services running during the pandemic.

Will special deliveries be made during the strike?

On its website, Royal Mail notes that the company will make as many Special Deliveries and deliver as many Tracked24 parcels as possible.

Delivering COVID test kits and medical prescriptions will be prioritised ‘wherever possible.’

Please note that no letters will be delivered besides the ones that are a part of Special Delivery.
