Queen’s funeral guidance for schools, transport and healthcare – All you need to know

Transport, healthcare appointments and schools are set to be impacted by Monday’s bank holiday in honour of the Queen’s funeral.

King Charles III confirmed that September 19 would be a national holiday with record numbers expected to be watching the events on television and in London.

World leaders will be in attendance with US President Joe Biden and French President Macron on the list to attend the ceremony at Westminister Abbey.

Shops across the UK have already announced changes to opening hours but schools and transport will be impacted too.

The Royal Mail is the latest to confirm suspended service for the whole day, while the Scottish Government have released information about schools and public transport.

Schools will close as a mark of respect to the late monarch, Scottish Government has said

Schools

The government has said schools across the country should close out of a mark of respect for the Queen on the day of her funeral at Westminster Abbey.

Advice from the government states: “This advice also applies to other education settings that would normally be closed on a bank holiday.

“Most local authority-run early learning and childcare (ELC) services are expected to close.”

Healthcare

Some health boards may see some disruption over the course of the day, however patients have been urged to visit their local NHS website for further details on how they might be affected.

A number of surgeries have already contacted patients to inform them they will be closing on Monday out of respect for the late monarch.

A Scottish Government statement read: “Health boards have been given guidance to support their planning for the holiday which underlines the importance of essential healthcare services continuing.

“This includes pre-planned treatments, and the winter vaccination programme. Patients should visit their local NHS board website for further information.”

Public transport

Trains

  • ScotRail and the Caledonian Sleeper will be running a normal service on Monday, however passengers are being urged to check before they plan to travel by train.
  • LNER and Avanti West Coast will also be running normal services. Several operators have put on more services to get people to London on Monday.

Buses

  • First buses will operate a Sunday service
  • Stagecoach will operate a Sunday service apart from in the Highlands and Islands where it will be a normal day service.
  • Lothian Buses, Lothian Country Buses, East Coast Buses and Airlink will all have Sunday services in operation.
  • McGill’s will have a Saturday service
  • West Coast Motors will have a normal service
  • Glasgow CityBus is operating a Sunday service.
  • Borders Buses have a normal weekday service in operation.

Glasgow Subway

A normal weekday service will be in operation on the Queen’s funeral.

Edinburgh Trams

A normal weekday service will be in operation on the trams in Edinburgh on Monday, September 19.

Ferries

CalMac and NorthLink ferries will be operating a normal service.
