New research has found those who contract covid have an increased risk of a blood clot condition. It comes as colder weather approaches, meaning an increase in respiratory diseases including coronavirus.
According to the research, published in Heart, those who are admitted to hospital with Covid are 27 times as likely to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) than those who never have the bug, the Sun reports..

Those who didn’t need hospital treatment were still three times more likely to develop VTE than those who never had the virus. VTE is a condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein. If the blood clot is large or left untreated, it can cause death.
People who are hospitalised with Covid were also 21 times more likely to be diagnosed with heart failure, and 17 times as likely to have a stroke, researchers from Queen Mary University of London, said. They were also more likely to be diagnosed atrial fibrillation (an irregular heart) and pericarditis (inflammation of the heart) and have a heart attack.
Death was also more common among those who had covid.
