Royal Mail workers set to strike on Christmas Eve

POSTAL workers will step up their strike action in defence of jobs and pay during Christmas, the Communications Workers Union (CWU) announced today.

In addition to stoppages on November 24, 25 and 30, and December 1, 115,000 workers will strike on December 9, 11, 14, 15, 23 and 24 — Christmas Eve.

The postal workers have already staged eight days of strike action.

Royal Mail has proposed a below-inflation pay increase of 9 per cent. Inflation stands at 11.1 per cent and employers are also demanding 10,000 redundancies.

Talks between the union and Royal Mail are continuing in the run-up to the next round of strike action.

The union said: “The CWU want a negotiated settlement with Royal Mail Group and will continue to engage the company to that end.

“But those in charge of Royal Mail need to wake up and realise we won’t allow them to destroy the livelihoods of postal workers.”
