Cumbrian postal workers will strike on Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25 after CWU talks with Royal Mail fell down despite Royal Mail offering their “best and final offer”.
Members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) – which represents postal workers – will walk out, as part of a longstanding dispute that has recently seen workers take a unanimous no confidence vote in company CEO Simon Thompson.
Royal Mail has accused the CWU of “holding Christmas to ransom” whilst the CWU have warned that this is the “end of Royal Mail as we know it.”
Friday is Black Friday and is one of the biggest shopping days of the year as retailers slash prices for a short period.
The CWU said Royal Mail’s plans to change the way the postal system worked, would turn it into “a gig economy-style parcel courier, reliant on casual labour”.
The company said in a statement that it had offered staff a 9% pay rise over 18 months and would make no compulsory redundancies before March next year.
