Vandalism continues to plague Ulverston town centre

Police have launched an investigation after the window of Cohens Chemist in Ulverston was smashed.

The Market Street store was said to have been targeted sometime overnight between 5pm on November 21 and 4am on November 22.

Enquiries are ongoing and officers are appealing for anyone with information to contact police.

This latest bout of vandalism comes days after fellow Ulverston businesses Andrew Rigg Carpets and The Music Room also reportedly saw their windows smashed.

The Queen Street retailers were targeted by vandals earlier in the week.

Damage to homes and other businesses have also been reported nearby.

Mark Wilson, Ulverston Town Councillor, said the council is engaging with local police to stamp down the ongoing issues of vandalism on the high street.

He said: “This is more bad news for the town.

“Traders and residents are really fed up about these ongoing issues.

“We have had police along twice to Ulverston Town Council meeting. It’s getting beyond a bad dream now.

“The present policy of police is to try to avoid getting young folk to get in trouble. The ringleader needs to be properly told where consequences will lead and deter any future criminal behaviour.”

Cumbria Police are also investigating a case of arson and burglary at Ulverston Post Office depot, in County Square, on November 6, and on Monday, November 14, reports emerged that a Royal Mail van was targeted by robbers, again in County Square.

Cumbria Police have confirmed that the two incidents are not connected.

The incident at the Post Office depot occurred at 9pm November 6, when police officers and fire crews were called to an arson attack at the premises.

Emergency services extinguished the fire, and established that part of the building had been entered and damage had been caused inside.

The second incident involved a number of items being taken from a Royal Mail van in County Square.

An immediate police response was launched and a man, in his thirties, was arrested in connection with the incident at about 3.15pm.

The driver of the Royal Mail van was taken to hospital but his injuries were not reported to be serious.
