Are there postal strikes in December 2022?

Royal Mail workers are striking on seven days throughout December, including Christmas Eve, which will heavily disrupt Christmas deliveries.

The strike dates are:

What will be delivered on strike days?

“We’re sorry for the disruption this is likely to cause you. We’re doing what we can to keep services running but customers should expect significant disruption,” Royal Mail said.

On days when strike action is taking place, Royal Mail say they will:

  • Deliver as many Special Delivery and Tracked24 parcels as possible
  • Prioritise the delivery of COVID test kits and medical prescriptions wherever possible
  • Not be delivering letters (with the exception of Special Delivery)

They are advising people to post their items as early as possible in advance of the strike dates.

Why are Royal Mail workers striking?

As explained by the CWU, Royal Mail members are striking because they have had an unagreed two percent pay deal imposed on them.

In a national strike ballot over pay, Royal Mail workers that belong to the union voted by a 97.6 percent majority to take action.

They are demanding a pay rise that fully addresses the current cost of living as Royal Mail has announced group profits of £758 million.

“Our members need it, our members deserve it – the company can afford it,” the CWU claimed. However, Royal Mail chairman Keith Williams said the company is losing £1 million a day in July.
