Are there more postal strikes in January 2023?

Postal strikes caused havoc over the Christmas period, but are there any more in January 2023? Read on to find out.

Many were left without their presents as Royal Mail workers walked out on both 23 and 24 December, two of the biggest postal days of the year.

Rail workers were also on strike in December as both industries demand better pay, pensions, working confitions and other benefits.

The Royal Mail strikes caused huge disruption and postage backlogs and it’s expected to take months to return to normal in some areas.

Thankfully, there is some good news…

Are there more postal strikes in January 2023?

No. Right now, there are no more postal strikes organised for January or the rest of 2023.

Royal Mail recently offered unions and workers a deal on pay and other benefits, but it was not accepted by the Communications Workers Union (CWU).

So, there could be more strikes in the future, unless a deal is accepted or the union agrees to back down. However, when writing this, there are no more planned Royal Mail strikes.

CWU rejects Royal Mail’s 9% pay deal

In late November, Royal Mail released an update in which the company revealed it had offered its “best and final offer” following months of talks with unions.

They claimed the revised offer includes “extensive improvements” including an enhanced pay deal of 9% over 18 months.

“We’re urging CWU leadership to accept the change and pay offer, call off future damaging strike action, for the good of our customers and our people,” they said.

“We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience the CWU’s continued strike action will cause. We are doing all we can to minimise delays and keep people, businesses and the country connected.”

However, the CWU rejected the deal immediately and state on their website they want “a pay rise that fully addresses the current cost of living”.

“Our members need it, our members deserve it – the company can afford it,” the union adds.

How post is affected on strike days

If any more postal strikes are called, Royal Mail’s industrial action page will be updated.

On national strike days, Royal Mail aims to deliver as many Special Delivery and Tracked 24 parcels as possible and also prioritises the delivery of COVID test kits and medical prescriptions.

They do not deliver letters, apart from Special Delivery, or other Door to Door mail and also do not accept customer handovers of Door to Door contracts at Walk Bundling Centres.

If another walkout is organised, Royal Mail recommends you should post your items well in advance of the strike date.
