Shocking video shows Royal Mail van and car burst into flames in East London in dead of night

A Royal Mail van and car erupted into flames on neighbouring streets in East London last night. The London Fire Brigade got several calls about a car on fire on Three Colt Street in Limehouse around 2.30am on Wednesday morning (February 1).

A fire engine from Poplar rushed to the scene, but 999 Control Officers were told by callers about a second fire around the corner in the Barleymow Estate carpark – also on Three Colt Street. A crew from Millwall then responded as firefighters began battling the burning vehicles.

By around 3.10am both fire were under control, but the van and the car were completely destroyed. The London Fire Brigade have not yet revealed the cause of the fire, and if they are linked.

It’s still unclear why two vehicles caught on fire in the middle of the night

Video footage taken by a local resident shows the the van and the car raging in the dead of night. Firefighters could be seen using a hose to put the van fire out, sending plumes of smoke from the smouldering chassis. The Metropolitan Police were also on scene and a cordon was put in place.

An LFB spokesperson said: “We received several calls about a car alight on Three Colt Street at 0227 this morning. A fire engine from Poplar Fire Station was sent to the scene. Shortly after, the Brigade’s 999 Control Officers received further calls about a second vehicle on fire on Three Colt Street and a crew from Millwall Fire Station responded. Both fires were under control by 0308. A van and a car were destroyed in the fires.”

The Metropolitan Police was approached for comment.
