When is the next Royal Mail strike?

The year has seen lots of industrial action taken by unions across multiple sectors over pay and conditions.

Railway workers, nurses, ambulance workers, teachers, and more have been striking or have plans for further strikes in the new year, with many citing insufficient pay rises when factoring in the rising cost of living as the cause.

The country even experienced its biggest single day of strike action in more than a decade on February 1, 2023.

Members of the Communication Workers Union (representing many Royal Mail workers) walked out in November and in the run-up to Christmas but did not hold any strikes over January.

But have any more strikes been planned for further 2023?

The Post Office is not involved in the CWU strikes and its branches usually remain open during Royal Mail strike days – although there can be some disruption to its services.

There have also been some separate pieces of industrial action taking place for Post Office workers, although nothing is currently planned.

Why is the Royal Mail going on strike?

CWU members are going on strike due to ongoing disputes over pay and unagreed changes to terms and conditions.

In a tweet announcing the new strike the cWU stated ‘We cannot and will not sit back as they destroy our members jobs.’

Last year’s strike action was supported by around 115,000 postal workers in ‘delivery, processing, distribution and all other functions’ as well as members working in Parcelforce.

After. the Christmas strikes, the CWU stated there would be no strikes during January in order to hold meaningful negotiations ‘with the aim of resolving the issues in dispute.’

In previous strikes, Royal Mail said that it would do everything it can to minimise disruption on strike dates but although it has ‘well-developed contingency plans’, it won’t be possible for them to ‘fully replace the daily efforts of its frontline workforce.’

They also promised to increase capacity in the days following strikes to help deal with disruption.
