Royal Mail issues 30-day warning to anybody who buys stamps

The Royal Mail has warned the price of first and second class stamps is set to rise in weeks. The company has confirmed first class stamps are set to rise in price by 15p to £1.10.

The price of second class stamps will also rise by 7p to 75p on April 3. Nick Landon, chief commercial officer at Royal Mail said: “We appreciate that many businesses and households are facing a challenging economic environment and we are committed to keeping our prices affordable.

“Letters have declined by 25% compared to pre-pandemic. We have to carefully balance our pricing against a continued decline in letter volumes and the increasing costs of delivering letters six days a week to an ever-growing number of addresses across the country. We are seeing a fundamental change in consumer needs with a greater shift in demand from letters to parcels.

“We need to make these price changes to ensure we can continue to maintain and invest in the one-price-goes-anywhere Universal Service for years to come.” The price blow comes days after the final set of stamps to feature the late Queen’s silhouette were released.

Elizabeth II’s image will appear on the set of special stamps to mark the 100th anniversary of steam locomotive the Flying Scotsman. David Gold, director of external affairs and policy at Royal Mail, said: “Flying Scotsman is a national treasure of engineering and design that conjures up the golden age of steam travel.”

He said the “remarkable locomotive epitomises the romance of rail travel and is loved” by people all over the world. He added: “We are honoured to mark this landmark milestone with a set of special stamps.”

Future special stamps will feature a silhouette of the King, the Royal Mail said. It comes after the death of the Queen last year.
