Are all the teacher strikes in March cancelled?
No, all teacher strikes in March have not been cancelled. Strikes in Wales and Scotland have been called off, but walkouts in England are still going ahead.
The strikes in Wales on Wednesday, March 15 and Thursday, March 16 have been cancelled following talks with the Welsh government.
“Following meaningful negotiations between the National Education Union and the Welsh Government, a new, revised and fully-funded pay offer will be put to teacher members,” the NEU said.
“As a result, the strike days scheduled in Wales next week (15 March and 16 March) have been called off.”
The EIS’s rolling programme of strikes for 20 days between March 13 and April 21 has also been cancelled this week.
This comes as the union has accepted a pay deal. Teachers will receive a 7% pay rise backdated to last April, another 5% in April and a further 2% next January.
All the upcoming teacher strike dates
NEU teachers in schools and sixth form colleges in England are still due to strike on:
- Wednesday, March 15
- Thursday, March 16
The action will cause huge disruption across Britain, with many schools expected to be closed or partially closed and students told to stay at home.
This comes as four more train strikes are due to take place in March and April as the Rail, Marine and Transport Union (RMT) continues its dispute over pay.
Why are teachers striking?
Educators are walking out to get a fully-funded increase in pay for teachers which matches inflation and begins to restore lost pay.
The latest round of NEU strikes was announced on January 16 and 90.44% of members in England voted to take action.
They declared seven days of strike action in February and March, affecting a staggering 23,400 schools in England and Wales.
This included February 1, 14 and 28 and March 1, 2, 15 and 16. Right now, there are no teacher strikes planned after March 16.
