Royal Mail boss Simon Thompson handed explosive package by MPs’ inquiry

Almost a year since Royal Mail became embroiled in a bitter industrial dispute, talks with union bosses are showing the first signs of a possible breakthrough.

Negotiations to end the protracted pay and conditions row with the Communication Workers Union have continued this week under a new process orchestrated by Sir Brendan Barber, a former general secretary of the TUC and ex-chairman of the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas). Progress has been made “in some areas”.

However, any hopes that Royal Mail is close to moving on from the saga have been scuppered by a damning report from MPs on the business, energy and industrial strategy committee, which threatens to deepen the woes of the beleaguered postal group.
