Are there any Royal Mail postal strikes in April 2023?

No, there aren’t any Royal Mail strikes planned in April when writing this. However, it looks like more could be called across the UK very soon.

In an update to union members on Friday (March 24), CWU general secretary Dave Ward warned that more strikes will be called if a deal isn’t reached imminently.

“If the company cannot reach an agreement by early next week… then we will serve notice for strike action next week,” he said.

This comes as the RMT has suspended two train strikes due to take place in March and April, generating hope a deal could be imminent.

Royal Mail responds to strike update

Royal Mail’s National Service Delivery Director Ricky McAulay has responded to the CWU threats of more strikes.

“After 11 months of talks, making numerous improvements to our offer based on CWU feedback, and mediated talks by Acas and Sir Brendan Barber, we are deeply concerned that we have yet to reach an agreement,” he said.

“If CWU persists with further strike action, this would only serve to threaten the job security of our postmen and women and make our pay offer unaffordable.”

He added that it’s not sustainable for the business to be losing more than £1 million a day and said: “Change cannot continue to be delayed.”

“We remain committed to getting the right deal, which secures the future of Royal Mail and its workforce.”

Why are Royal Mail workers striking?

Workers at Royal Mail have been walking out since August 2022 as they want a “dignified, proper pay rise,” the CWU said.

The union is demanding that the Royal Mail Group award their members a pay increase that covers the current cost of living.

This came after Royal Mail decided to impose a measly 2% pay rise on its employees and workers then voted by a 97.6 percent majority to take action.

“Where inflation has soared to 11.7%, the imposition would lead to a dramatic reduction in workers’ living standards,” the CWU added.
