Ofcom urged to take action over lack of Royal Mail deliveries to homes

Concerns about problems with Royal Mail deliveries across Nuneaton have been raised with Ofcom. Over recent weeks householders in communities across the town have aired concerns about not regularly getting their post.

CoventryLive has reported on examples of mail not being delivered in Vernons Lane and in Galley Common, while Nuneaton’s MP Marcus Jones has said he too has been contacted by residents about the lack of service. In fact, he has received so many representations that the town’s voice in Parliament has written to the chief executive of Ofcom about the situation.

The service locally has been hit by high levels of staff illness as well issues with new housing developments, but Mr Jones said that some residents are only receiving mail once a week, which he claims is having an impact on their lives.

“It is fundamental that post be delivered on time given important information that is circulated such as medical appointments, financial statements and driving licences and more,” the MP said.

“I recognise the hard work and dedication of postal workers and they need to be given the support and capacity to do their jobs. My hope is that Ofcom will ensure that Nuneaton gets the first class service it deserves from Royal Mail.”

In the letter, the MP asks Dame Melanie Dawes, chief executive of Ofcom, to look at the situation of late mail deliveries in the town and, urges her to use her powers to make sure that the service improves.

“I am very concerned at the performance of Royal Mail,” the letter reads. “A significant number of constituents are frequently going multiple weeks without receiving any mail at all, while other constituents are complaining they are routinely only receiving one or two deliveries a week.

“Some of the mail which should have been delivered is of significance given it may contain medical notes, financial statements and driving licences. Such important documents are obviously more than simply a source of frustration to my constituents.”

It adds: “Can I please urge you to consider all measures within your power, as a regulator, to ensure Royal Mail service delivery improves for residents in the Nuneaton area.”
