Darren Jones: Is the select committee sensation destined for the shadow cabinet?

He’s the Labour MP taking the fight to Royal Mail, Amazon, and P&O. Executives quake at select committee hearings as they’re met with his distinct brand of waspish ire. And as the self-professed “first ever Darren in the House of Commons”, you can’t miss him.

Step forward Darren Jones, MP for Bristol North West, one of Labour’s rising stars – and a name to watch out for as Keir Starmer considers a reshuffle.

Jones, a trained lawyer, has made waves as Chair of the House of Commons Business and Trade Select Committee, where he uses his legal nous to devastating effect.

Clips of him dismantling corporate stuffed shirts have made him a TikTok sensation.

He’s, err, refreshingly direct. “Are you just a shameless criminal?” he asked P&O boss Peter Hebblethewaite following the mass sacking of staff in March last year. His skewering of Grant Shapps, the business secretary, is another humdinger.

Now there are whispers that Jones, 36, is tipped for a role in an expected shake-up of Starmer’s shadow operation following local elections next week.

The final line-up will be the team Starmer hopes to fight the next general election.

Could Darren “rottweiler” Jones get the call-up? Watch this space.
