What’s the meaning of ‘ER’ and what will be the symbol of King Charles III?

Alongside the paegentry and pomp of the last few days due to the Coronation rehearsals and preparation, some changes will take place with the new King who officially begins his reign today. One of those changes will be seen on the post boxes. This is because they bear the symbol of Queen Elizabeth II. This symbol is individual for each monarch and will need to be changed for the new King Charles III.

At present, around two-third of post boxes contain the symbol of Elizabeth with the rest keeping those of prior monarchs such as George VI, Elizabeth’s father. Changes will be made around the United Kingdom and the new roya cypher will be seen more frequently around the countries that make up Great Britain and the Commonwealth.

What does ER mean?

‘ER’ was the symbol, known as a cypher, for Queen Elizabeth. The initials stand for Elizabeth Regina, with regina being the latin word for queen.

What will King Charles II have for his cypher?

The King already revealed the new cypher at his accession ceremony on September 10. He displayed a tie pin with the new cypher ‘CR’. This stands for ‘Charles Rex’, with rex being the latin word for king.
