Royal Mail rolls out changes to parcel delivery service affecting UK customers

Royal Mail has announced a new redelivery process that will hopefully save customers time and reduce carbon emissions.

BristolLive reports the postal giant has introduced a new policy where parcels that were missed during the initial delivery attempt will now be automatically redelivered. This signifies a shift from the previous practice where recipients had to personally visit their local Royal Mail depot to collect their parcels if they missed the postie.

Starting this month, a new procedure is being implemented for parcel deliveries. If you happen to be away when a parcel arrives, a ‘something for you’ card will be placed through your door.

This card will provide you with important details, such as whether the parcel has been safely deposited in a secure location or entrusted to a trusted neighbour. In cases where these alternatives are not feasible, postal workers will automatically reschedule the delivery of any parcels that are too large for your letterbox or require a signature.

The redelivery will take place on the next working day, ensuring you receive your package promptly. Delivery can also be rescheduled for a more convenient day, which will remain a free service.

This can either be to the original home address, to a neighbour, safe place or a local post office. The changes aim to save people time by not having to visit a collection point.

As a result of the changes, collecting parcels after the initial delivery attempt will no longer be an option. Instead, individuals will need to wait until Royal Mail makes an automatic redelivery on the following working day (excluding Sundays and bank holidays).

In the event that the redelivery is unsuccessful, the postie will leave another ‘something for you’ card specifying the available options for the recipient. You can then arrange for another redelivery or personally collect your item from the local customer service point starting the next working day.

It’s important to note that if the item remains undelivered and there is no instruction from the recipient, it will be securely stored for a maximum of 18 days (or 21 days in cases where customs fees are due). If the item is neither collected nor redelivered during this period, it will be returned to the sender.
