A report published by Sky News has sparked speculation about the future of Simon Thompson, the Royal Mail’s chief executive.

Sky News says it has learnt that the board of International Distributions Services (IDS), Royal Mail’s London-listed owner, could announce that Simon Thompson is to resign in a matter days.

Other sources from the City also told Sky News that Mr Thompson “had become increasingly disillusioned about the job in recent weeks”.

Thompson joined International Distributions Services, Royal Mail’s parent company, back in November 2017 when he took on a role as as a non-executive director.

The speculation follows a highly-reported labour dispute that saw Thompson grilled by MPs at a select committee.

The dispute now looks set to be resolved after an agreement was reached in late April between the Royal Mail and the CWU on pay and conditions. However, if the Sky News report is accurate, it appears that the protracted nature of the industrial dispute, its expense, as well as the apparent damage to employee relations and brand reputation, may have convinced the board to make a change at the top.
