Royal Mail boss Simon Thompson steps down following strikes

MORE changes are needed at the top of Royal Mail, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said today after under-fire chief executive Simon Thompson finally confirmed rumours that he plans to step down.

The former banker, who was accused of misleading MPs earlier this year when he denied that bosses were intrusively tracking workers’ productivity, will remain in post until the end of October but said it was the “right time” to go.

The privatised firm’s parent company, International Distributions Services, reportedly wanted fresh leadership after the 500-year-old public service reached a deal with the CWU in April that could end a long-running and bitter dispute over working conditions and pay.

General secretary Dave Ward is urging members to accept the package in a ballot next month.

He said: “Simon Thompson is one of the key people responsible for the appalling mantra of ‘it’s our business to run,’ which saw the employer openly attack its own workforce on a relentless basis.

“However, we recognise that the CEO was only one of the senior leadership team responsible for the unacceptable actions and behaviours of managers. Further change is vital.”
