Royal Mail apologise to Sheldon residents ‘missing crucial health appointments’ due to delays

Royal Mail have apologised to Sheldon residents left ‘in despair’ who are missing ‘crucial health appointments’ as letters are not being delivered on time. The postal firm has said ‘higher levels of sickness than usual’ at a local post office was to blame.

A number of concerned Sheldon residents have contacted Lib Dem Councillor Paul Tilsley over scant deliveries of post since Easter. One resident complained he had received ’13 letters in one go’ as many feared missing hospital appointments and other important communications.

Cllr Tilsley has taken residents’ complaints to the Chief Executive Officer of Royal Mail, Simon Thompson after being left frustrated with lack of action from previous appeals for action. When approached, Royal Mail said they were bringing in agency workers to manage the workload.

Similar post delays have been reported in other areas across the country. Cllr Tilsley has been working to get answers for his local residents.

He said: “Royal Mail have an obligation to ensure that Mail is delivered to residents on time and that they needed to provide the necessary workforce to provide a first class service.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are sorry some residents have experienced delays in the Sheldon area. This is an important issue, and when delays happen, every effort is made to ensure post is delivered and the reasons behind the delays are addressed.

“At the local delivery office, there have been higher levels of sickness than usual. To address this, agency workers have been brought in, and there is ongoing recruitment to manage the anticipated workload going forward. Additional plans have also led to a marked improvement in the service over the last fortnight.

“Our posties make deliveries six days a week when there is mail to be delivered. As in Sheldon, if a customer experiences a delay, we will prioritise their particular route the next day. This is to ensure the vast majority of customers never experience a delay of more than one day.
