Quaint former Somerset town centre Post Office set to become house

A quaint former Post Office in the heart of Somerton is set to become part of a house. A planning application to incorporate the former retail site at The Triangle into the existing residential premises connected to it has been successful.

The Post Office closed in March 2022, but the property still features a classic red letterbox on its doorstep. It also boasts two attractive bay windows on the first floor painted in Post Office red.

The site was put up for sale last year with estate agent GTH with a guide price of £475,000. At the time, GTH believed a potential buyer could live in the accommodation and run a small shop from the former Post Office area, or merge the former store into the house and increase the size of the home.

A planning application was then submitted to change the use of part of the ground floor from a Post Office to residential. The owners hope to convert the old retail space into a “sitting room/playroom”.

Now, that application has been successful. A notice from Somerset Council reveals that “the council has decided that prior approval is not required”.

Planning documents for the change of use state: “This is a traditional stone-faced terraced property, with projecting bay windows at first floor level, and a painted replacement timber shopfront with stone panel below at ground floor level. A part of the ground floor of the building has been in retail use, with the remainder of the ground floor, first floor and second floor in a residential use as a dwelling.

“The floor space allocated to retail use was a small proportion by comparison to the whole building, occupied as a home by the owners. The premises were not owned by the Post Office, but rather the current owners, who used the retail space for that purpose, until trading from it ceased in March 2022.”
