Horror as bride’s mum attempts to wear ‘off-limits’ dress to wedding

The bride-to-be took to Reddit to share her wedding dilemma after she found out what her mother had planned to wear to the ceremony.

Writing on the Am I the a******” forum, the woman asked whether she was overreacting about the dress being a “champagne colour”.

While it wasn’t exactly white, she explained that the gown style meant it “looked too much like a wedding dress” and was even less gold than she thought.

After seeing an image of the dress the daughter revealed that she felt disrespected by her parent and didn’t want her to wear it.

And she garnered plenty of support from fellow forum users who agreed that the colour of the outfit is widely known to be “off-limits” for weddings.

In the post, the bride wrote: “My wedding colours are navy, dusty blue, sage green, and silver.

“My mother wants to wear a champagne, one-shoulder, long dress to my wedding as mother of the bride…

“It looks too much like a wedding dress to me and the colour doesn’t look gold in pictures. I honestly don’t know what to do because it’s upsetting to me she doesn’t want to respect my wishes by getting a different dress.

“I’m trying to let it go and let her wear it but it’s screaming ‘I want to be the centre of attention’ to me.”

While the daughter was upset about the dress itself, she added that “the principle of it” goes deeper into her relationship with her mother.

The Reddit poster explained: “My mother has tried to upstage me my entire life and she constantly makes jabs about my weight and how I would be a prettier bride if I lost weight. (We look identical I’m just chubbier).

“This is a continual struggle of her not caring about my opinion or requests. So it’s not just a dress, it’s the principle of it.”

And the bride wasn’t alone in thinking that her mother’s dress was inappropriate for a wedding. One person took to the tread to comment: “Loads of people wear champagne wedding dresses because it is close enough to white. In any case, it’s more of a good tint which is outside of your wedding colours and as the mother of the bride should lean into your chosen colours more.”

Another responded: “Yeah I feel like any sort of champagne, cream, etc. is known to be off-limits”. They added that it is also “pretty common” for brides to wear these shades instead of just “pure white”.

Others noted that it is custom for the mother of the bride to wear a dress that’s “part of the wedding scheme”, which in this case, “champagne” tones are not included. The Reddit users pointed out that the mother “has no reason” to wear the dress, and it must just be down to “wanting attention”.

However, some forum users pointed out that “there’s no way” the dress could be mistaken for a wedding gown, and that the bride should “let it go”.

One person wrote: “That doesn’t really look bridal… your mum isn’t going to upstage you.”
