Andy Carter MP meets with Post Office manager to keep branches open

The Warrington South MP held a meeting with the Cheshire and Merseyside manager, as well as Latchford sub-postmaster Chris Burroughs.

It comes after he spoke in Parliament in support of Post Office branches, which are struggling more and more during the cost of living crisis.

Mr Carter spoke about his experience meeting Chris Borroughs, who told the MP that 80 per cent of transaction commissions go into the pocket of the Post Office, leaving him with 20 per cent to pay staff, business rates, and rent.

It has also previously been reported that the Post Office in Culcheth is also under threat, with management saying that the village is close to losing its local office.

Raising the issue of dwindling support for local Post Offices in Parliament, Mr Carter explained that branches are becoming more and more important for the most vulnerable in society, especially given that more banks are leaving the country’s high streets.

On this latest meeting, Mr Carter said: “After raising my concerns about the future viability of smaller post offices in Parliament, I have been meeting with the Post Office’s area manager for Cheshire, along with Latchford sub-postmaster Chris Burroughs.

“I am keen to make sure that important services from the DVLA and Passport Office are retained in high street branches and investment is made in the local network.

“Given the popularity of online shopping deliveries, the link with Royal Mail and other delivery companies needs to be maintained.

“Chris and his team in Latchford offer a deposit and withdrawal service for most banks, as well as a foreign currency in the bureau de change.

“We do not want to lose these really important services in our local communities, and I am working to ensure there’s a fair deal for postmasters who runs the services.”
