Royal Mail has opened its new state-of-the-art Midlands Super Hub, commemorated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a special performance, and a visit from the local member of parliament.
Don’t Miss
Situated in Daventry, Northamptonshire, the sprawling 53-acre site, equivalent to 30 football pitches, now stands as Royal Mail’s largest automated parcels facility.
Equipped with advanced technology, the hub has the capacity to handle up to 90,000 items per hour, with each parcel processed through the sorting machines in just seven minutes.
Alongside the recently opened Super Hub in the North West, the new hub creates an interconnected and leading parcels network across the United Kingdom.
“This is a very exciting time for Royal Mail. The opening of this Super Hub is a key part in our journey to revolutionize our parcels business,” said Grant McPherson, Chief Operations Officer of Royal Mail.
“We’ve now created a state-of-the-art network of Super Hubs that processes parcels at incredible speeds, has the transport links to ship them efficiently across the United Kingdom, and fulfills the needs of our customers for a reliable parcels business that will deliver for them the next day, every day of the week.
“It’s truly an investment in the future. It puts us on track to meet our mission to reduce our carbon emissions, and with the Royal Mail Academy centralized at the Super Hub, it’s also an investment in the development and future of our employees,”
Chris Heaton-Harris, Member of Parliament for Daventry and Secretary of State for Northern Ireland attended the opening and praised the investment by Royal Mail, foreseeing significant economic benefits for the area.
Royal Mail Hub Designed for Sustainability
Designed with environmental sustainability, the new facility incorporates energy-efficient features, rainwater harvesting systems, and self-generated solar electricity.
Its strategic location near major online retailers allows for timely parcel drop-offs, ensuring next-day delivery.
Notably, the integration of a rail link and a dedicated Royal Mail train connecting the Super Hub to the West Coast Mainline offers a superior alternative to road transportation.
By replacing up to 16 Royal Mail trucks daily and over 3,000 annually, the train contributes to Royal Mail’s Steps to Zero campaign, striving to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
In conjunction with Royal Mail’s other operations, the Midlands Super Hub will enhance local and national efforts to deliver high-quality service consistently, satisfying customer expectations.
