Replace Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo bearskin caps with faux fur, SNP MPs demand

Addressing James Cartlidge, the defence procurement minister, they added: “While the look of today’s towering cap is iconic, the material it’s made from is most certainly not.

“Replacing the bearskin with faux fur would allow the history of the caps to endure in a way that reflects modern society’s respect for wildlife.

“We would be very pleased for Scotland to lead the charge and for our guards to pioneer this humane, modern cap.”

The call was backed by animal rights group Peta, to coincide with the launch of this year’s Tattoo at the Edinburgh Festival.

A 25-date run officially begins on Friday night, following a “preview night” held on Thursday. Several of the 800 performers were wearing the bearskin caps, with this year’s show featuring a tribute to the late Queen.
