Progress continues on the demolition of a former Royal Mail sorting office in Nottingham which is due to be home to student accommodation. The Bendigo Building on the corner of Bath Street and Brook Street, on the city centre’s border with Sneinton, stood vacant for 20 years after Royal Mail vacated the premises.
Plans were put forward for a 13-storey block at the site with 692 bed spaces, with the authority seeking to cater for the increasing student population of Nottingham with a lesser reliance on HMOs. The former offices are under the management of the Bricks Group, which is overseeing the proposed £25 million development.

The building was named after the famous 19th-century boxer, William ‘Bendigo’ Thompson and was once voted the city’s ugliest building. It was recently revealed that a ‘cave probing’ investigation had to be undertaken to check for the ancient caves the city is famed for.
Previous planning permission dating back to 2008 expired, with the overall scheme being sold by Godwin Developments. Pictures below show the current state of the demolition works.
