Plans filed for riverside walk near new Rotherham town centre housing

PLANS have been filed for a riverside path along the Don – eventually connecting new Rotherham town centre housing with Forge Island.

The proposals from RMBC also include enablement works to land behind the Cutlers’ pub in preparation for more properties.

This car park site was bought by the council in late 2022, with the hope of adding to the housing already built at Sheffield Road and Westgate in future.

The plans also include an upgrade to surfacing on worn-out Water Lane and repairs to the existing river wall.

A land-swap deal is being sought with Royal Mail to allow the riverside walk to connect with Main Street by going behind the postal depot, linking with Forge Island and the wider town centre.

A council spokesperson said: “The proposals will therefore help pedestrian connectivity and enhance the role of the River Don as a key asset within the town centre by re-opening this part of the riverside to pedestrians.”
